LIPOSOMES AN OVERVIEW– A NOVEL TREND IN THE DRUG DELIVERY

Liposomes are result of self assembly of phospholipid in an aqueous media resulting in closed bilayered structures. Liposomes are one of unique drug delivery system which can be use in controlling and targeting drug delivery system. Liposomes are generally classified based upon structure, method of preparation, composition and application, conventional liposome, and specialty liposome. Liposomes are formulated and processed to differ in size, composition, charge and lamellarity, depending upon method of preparation either active loading technique or passive loading technique. The prepared liposomes are characterized for visual appearance, liposomal size distribution, lamillarity, liposome stability, entrapped volume and surface charges. Different marketed formulations are available in market for liposomes. The liposomes have many applications which increase its importance over other formulations.

IMPROVEMENT OF SOLUBILITY OF LOW SOLUBLE (BCS CLASS 2) DRUGS BY NOVEL DRUG SOLUTION DROPPED TECHNIQUE

The dissolution rate of drug from tablet is affected by its active ingredient’s surface area and consequently, affects in oral bioavailability of the product. The development of formulations containing poorly-water-soluble drugs for oral delivery can be achieved by improving their dissolution. It has been found that increasing the available surface area by reducing the particle size can often markedly improve dissolution rates and lead to...

BUCCAL MUCOSA AS NOVEL DRUG DELIVERY PLATFORM

Buccal drug delivery had lately become an important route of drug administration. The rich in vascularization of oral mucosa and its permeability too many drugs make this route an attractive alternative to the oral and parenteral routes for systemic drug delivery. Drug delivery via the oral mucous membrane was considered to be a promising alternative to the oral route. Sublingual route was a useful when rapid onset of action was desired with better patient compliance than orally ingested tablets.

HERBAL PLANTS A RELIABLE SOURCE FOR DRUG DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT

Though remarkable success have been achieved in the discovery and development of various drugs for the treatment and management of several ailments, there is still need for more discoveries. This is due to the reason that some of the drugs currently in use posseses one or more of the following drawbacks (i) high toxicity level (ii) increase lose of effectiveness or low efficacy (iii) costly or (iv) inaccessable. Herbs have now become the main stream for drug discovery and development. Conservative estimate have revealed that there are over 250,000 higher plant species, and only a minute proportion have been screened exhaustively for their possible therapeutic properties. Atleast, over 120 unique pharmacological substances derived from plants are currently being used as drugs in various countries in the world. Apart from the direct use of plant derivatives as therapeutic agents, they can also serve as models for the design, synthesis or semisynthesis of other therpeutic agents. In conclusion, herbs are a reliable source for more discovery and development of new drugs. The scientific community should therefore harness this resource by improving research on it.
